Weekly, fortnightly and monthly pay
Australian employers pay weekly, fortnightly or monthly. The calculator converts between them using 52 weeks, 26 fortnights and 12 months in a year, so a monthly pay is a little more than two fortnightly pays.
- Weekly pay calculator: choose Weekly and enter your gross weekly pay to see the annual equivalent and your take-home pay per week.
- Fortnightly pay calculator: choose Fortnightly. Remember that 26 fortnights do not line up exactly with 12 months.
- Monthly salary calculator: choose Monthly for salaried roles paid once a month.
- Hourly: enter your rate, hours per week and the weeks you expect to work. See the hourly to salary calculator for more detail.
Gross salary, package and take-home pay
Gross salary is what you earn before tax. Your total package adds the 12% employer super contribution. Take-home pay (net pay) is what is left after income tax, the Medicare levy and any HELP repayment.
If a job ad quotes a figure “including super”, switch the superannuation option to “Included in salary” so tax is calculated on the base salary only. The salary package calculator shows the split on its own.
Frequently asked questions
How is take-home pay calculated in Australia?
Take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax, the Medicare levy and any compulsory HELP repayment. For example, on a $100,000 salary in 2026–27 the estimate is $20,520 income tax and $2,000 Medicare levy, leaving about $77,480 a year. Super is paid by your employer into your fund and is not part of take-home pay.
What is the tax-free threshold?
Australian residents pay no income tax on the first $18,200 they earn each financial year. Income above that is taxed at 15% and then at higher rates as it passes each bracket. Foreign residents do not get the tax-free threshold.
Does my salary include super?
It depends on your contract. Most advertised salaries are "plus super", meaning the employer pays 12% on top. A "package" or "total remuneration" figure usually includes super. Use the superannuation option in the calculator to switch between the two.
What is the Medicare levy?
The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income and helps fund the public health system. Low-income earners pay a reduced levy or none at all, and some people are exempt. It is separate from the Medicare levy surcharge, which this calculator does not include.
When do I have to repay my HELP or HECS debt?
In 2026–27, compulsory repayments start once your repayment income is above $69,528. Repayments are worked out only on the income above that threshold, so a small pay rise will not cause a large jump in repayments.
